Entering a confined space can be hazardous or deadly if done incorrectly. OSHA defines a confined space as:

· Large enough for an employee to enter fully and perform assigned work

· It is not designed for continuous occupancy; and

· Has limited or restricted means of entry or exit

A permit-required confined space meets this definition, but also has one or all of the following factors:

· It contains or has the potential to contain a hazardous atmosphere

· It contains material with the potential to engulf or drown someone who has entered it

· It has an internal configuration that might cause an entrant to be trapped or asphyxiated by inwardly converging walls or by a floor that slopes downward and tapers to a smaller cross-section; or

· Contains any other recognized serious safety or health hazards

Statistics show that less than 85% of people who die completing this kind of work have not had sufficient training or lack the equipment to ensure a safe atmosphere. Over 60% of those who die were trying to help the first victim to safety.

The reality is that no confined space is safe until proven safe by testing, control of hazardous energy (LOTO), and the right gear to get you out safely.

· Train your employees on how to safely enter a confined space, consistent with OSHA standards

· Provide trained and qualified personnel for assessing the hazards in advance

· Provide a confined space permit

· Air monitoring

· All PPE (harnesses, helmets, rigging)

· Personnel retrieval system
